                     Same Sex Relationships

From 5 December 2005 same sex couples can have their relationships legally recognised. From then on anyone who registers a civil partnership will have the same rights as a married couple in areas like tax, social security, inheritance and workplace benefits.

The new rights apply to the UK as a whole, but the information provided on this site deals with registering a civil partnership in England and Wales.

For more information about civil partnership in Scotland go to

The Northern Ireland guidance is available on the Office of Law Reform website

Anyone who is not registers as a civil partnership
Unmarried partners have no legal right to a persons property if no Last will is made NAMING THEM as beneficiaries.
In some circumstances the  home is registered in the sole name of one partner only. If you are not are not a beneficial joint owner and you are not named in a Last Will you may have no legal claim to a home or property you share together.
This would also be the case with a business if the partner is self employed or a sole trader.
The only sure way is to make a Last Will and end any doubt or ambiguity that may arise.

it is very important to ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes.

Unless you write a will specifically stating how your assets are to to divided or shared they may automatically (according to the law of intestacy) go to surviving (siblings or parents) or other members of your family.
